Worcester Rapper Adam Morrison Zelny, who performs as Siddharthveda, is making some interesting hip-hop music, with an approach to music making and collaboration that's both a bit free-form and modern, and brings out a lot of the strengths in each participant's work. This is evidenced by the recent CD, "The Syntactic," and its subsequent release party at the Hotel Vernon, where Siddharthveda performed with an eclectic group of hip-hop artists, including Eel Rat, Elote Villanueva, Lauren Monroe, Mingo and Cha-Cha Connor.
His listening habits also appear to be a bit free-form, and mostly digitized, with a healthy appetite for local radio.
"I rock a 4 gig iPod that I occasionally use for walking, but more so for DJing at the Dragonfly Lounge," says Zelny.
"It all depends on what I use the music for. As for the home studio, I have more than 30 gigs of music stored that's not my own, as in not created in my studio. CDs? Sold most of them to Jelly's on Park Avenue a while ago. The one's I kept I did so for the sleeve art or sentimental value ... like the first CD I ever bought, which was the soundtrack for `The Crow.' Still have it."
Zelny's tastes cover a wide range, and include a mix of traditional studio albums by the likes of Lauren Hill, and downloadable mixtapes, such as Jean Grae's "Cookies or Comas."
"Grae is simply a sick poet who I've admired for a while now," says Zelny. (Hip parlance check: The term "sick" is a good thing these days. Sort of like "bad" used to be.) "Her first album (to my understanding) was self-produced and excellent ... a hip-hop scholar who makes you feel absolutely great about being a part of the art."
And speaking of scholars, it's clear he's got a mountain of respect for Blue Scholars, mixtape cover design, and its smooth, almost bluesy brand of conscious hip-hop and its willingness to shake up sounds and styles. "With respect to all politically poetic and rhythmically remarkable hip-hop artists everywhere," says Zelny, "I feel that Blue Scholars are like a hub for the style; brilliantly unique yet accessible to a large crowd."
The Internet, of course, is a repository of music of all sorts, and you can turn up all sorts of interesting things if you go looking for it, a habit Zelny definitely seems to have.
"I stumbled across Nujabes, a Japanese producer, a couple years ago while net surfing for new tunes," says Zelny.
"I was immediately hooked by the diversity in his albums, not to mention the host of lyricists he employed on both works. I love hearing so much beauty and talent cross a whole album like that."
It's not all new-fangled, though.
"Been listening to `Claire De Lune' again lately," says Zelny. "I love knowing the feeling of playing the keys while listening to a piece like that. It makes the experience accessible on a completely different level."
Of course, it's clearly Hill who has his musical heart, and with good reason.
"Lauryn Hill has many of our hearts because it's so very clear how much of hers she puts into her music, her lyrics. Sound cliche? Naw, it's simply true."
We couldn't agree more.
Guilty pleasures: We asked Zelny if there was anything in his collection that embarrassed him,Soundclick design, and why it was there. "`Embarrassed' isn't exactly the feeling," he said, "but I know what you mean. For a recent Dragonfly Lounge I compiled many track suggestions from a bunch of close friends, one of which was the Punjabi MC/Jay-Z track `Beware of the Boys' or something. I definitely have a tough time appreciating what Jay-Z says in his rhymes. However, `The Black Album' has some good cuts."Related articles:
