Advertising on a Budget -- Part 2: Thinking Small
This is the second article of a three-part series. I'm illustrating the marketing challenges of a small business, moncler, PrescottWeddings.com.Our goal was to both build the PWC brand and drive traffic to the Web site. Advertising regularly was essential. Yet it was also essential to keep our costs down. So we leveraged our monthly newspaper advertising to stretch our marketing dollar as far as we could. How did we do that? We "thought small."We bought one inch by two column inch ads (a column inch in this particular publication is approx. 1.88 inches). The ads were one inch high and almost 4 inches long.To reflect the small ad, the copy also had to be short and sweet. Like so:Prescott Weddings.com. Everything you need to say "I do.". Everything you need to say "I do."Just the name of the business and the slogan. We put the name in large type and made the tagline much smaller.Did it work? The first day this ad ran, we garnered 350 hits on the Web site and several phone calls from business owners who wanted more information. And that was just the beginning. Hits steadily grew during the campaign, and every time it ran we always noticed a jump. Not bad for a little ad.Conventional wisdom says bigger is better. And while it is true that big ads stand out (after all, they do take a big chunk of real estate on the page) it doesn't mean big is the only way to go. Small ads can pack a punch too.Why did the PWC ad work? First of all, it got noticed because it stuck out (yes, small ads can stick out). It had an odd shape -- long and thin, louboutin, not a square like so many other ads. The name was big -- bigger than many other fonts surrounding it. (But not so big that the ad lacked sufficient white space.)But probably the biggest reason it worked was because the message was simple. This is clearly a Web site about having a wedding in the Prescott area. Therefore if you're involved with weddings, whether as a business or on a more personal level, and you're also associated with Prescott, then this is a Web site clearly worth taking a peek at.People instantly got the message. And they got it even if they only scanned the paper. It was quick and painless for them -- something all ads should strive to be.What's also interesting is how this ad hit its target market. I've spoken to people (mostly men) who have no interest in getting married and have never seen the ad even though they read the paper. Conversely, businesses in the wedding industry and brides have said they see the ad all the time. Now, you may have a business name that doesn't capture your business' products or services as well as PrescottWeddings.com (my business name for example). In this case,Supra Shoes, why not think of a catchy tag line you can use in those small ads to drive people to your Web site?Web sites can be huge,Supra, wordy, information-stuffed selling tools. So use short, abercrombie, sweet one-message statement to get people to go look and learn more about your business rather than try to shove everything in an ad. Don't forget to include your business name and logo for branding purposes.Okay, abercrombie and fitch, so small ads with one simple message work. "Harmed Islam"
Risk of retaliation But while some hoped his death may terminate al Qaida, louboutin pas cher, many others believe that al Qaida franchises across the world would continue campaigns against the United States. In Yemen,Supra Shoes, bin Laden's ancestral home and the base for al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which has been behind recent foiled anti-American attacks, some believed his death would cause his group to lose heart. In Iraq, ravaged by nearly a decade of violence in the battle between bin Laden and the West, louboutin, some were cautious about the circumstances in which Washington announced his death. In non-Arab Iran, a sworn enemy of the United States, abercrombie france, some ordinary people were also sceptical of Washington's account: "Are we sure that he has been killed?" said Tehran shopkeeper Ali Asghar Sedaghat. "Or is it another game of the Americans?" On the streets of Saudi Arabia, bin Laden's native land which stripped him of his citizenship after September 11, there was a mood of disbelief and sorrow among many. Another, anonymous, Saudi said: "He might have had a noble idea to elevate Islam but his implementation was wrong and caused more harm than good. I believe his death will calm people down and may dry up the wells of terrorism." "The damage bin Laden had caused Islam is beyond appalling and a collective shame," said another Saudi, Mahmoud Sabbagh, on Twitter. "The death of Osama is coming at a very interesting time. The perfect time, when Al Qaida is in eclipse and the sentiments of freedom are rising," said Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi commentator and independent analyst. "This is the end of this play. The play about the character of bin Laden that was fabricated by Americans to deform the image of Islam and Muslims," said Ali Hussain. "How can you can convince me that all these years American could not kill or even reach him. Americans knew bin Laden suffered from health problems. Maybe he was approaching his death and they wanted to exploit it." "I am not happy at the news. Osama was seeking justice. He was taking revenge on the Americans and what they did to Arabs, his death to me is martyrdom, I see him a martyr," added Egyptian Sameh Bakry, abercrombie, a Suez Canal employee. Other Gulf Arab states also eschewed comment. Omar Bakri, a Lebanese Sunni cleric, mourned bin Laden as a martyr: "His martyrdom will give momentum to a large generation of believers and jihadists. Officials in the country of his birth maintained near silence at the news of bin Laden's death. The state news agency merely noted that Washington and Pakistan had announced it. For some in the Middle East, bin Laden has been seen as the only Muslim leader to take the fight against Western dominance to the heart of the enemy - in the form of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington in 2001. 2011-05-02 20:05 Recalling the mass demonstrations on Cairo's Tahrir Square, doudoune moncler, he added: "The people at Tahrir Square had shut down the ideas and concepts of bin Laden." BEIRUT - Those who revered him prayed the news was not true but many in the Arab world felt the death of Osama bin Laden was long overdue. "Oh God, please make this news not true ... God curse you, Obama," said a message on a Jihadist forum in some of the first Islamist reaction to the al Qaida leader's death. Oh Americans ... it is still legal for us to cut your necks." "Al Qaida is finished without bin Laden. Al Qaida members will not be able to continue, abercrombie and fitch," said Ali Mubarak, a Yemeni man in his 50s as he sipped tea in a cafe in Sanaa. Another strand of opinion believes that bin Laden and al Qaida brought catastrophe on their Muslim world as the United States retaliated with two wars, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the word "Islam" became associated with "terrorism". Egyptian Thanaa Al-Atroushy said: "Though I am surprised, I don't think such news will affect anything in any way. He is a man of al Qaida, who are known to have weird beliefs to justify killing the innocent like those of September 11." "I feel that it is a lie," said one Saudi in Riyadh. He did not want to be named. "I don't trust the U.S. government or the media. They just want to be done with his story. It would be a sad thing if he really did die. I love him and in my eyes he is a hero and a jihadist." For many Arabs, inspired by the popular upheavals of the past few months, the news of Osama bin Laden's death had less significance than it once might have. "Al Qaida is not a political party, it is a jihadist movement. Al Qaida does not end with the death of a leader. Bin Laden was first the generation of the Qaida and now there is a second,Supra, third, fourth and fifth generation." Some said the killing of the Saudi-born al Qaida founder in Pakistan was scarcely relevant any more, now that secular uprisings have begun toppling corrupt Arab autocrats who had resisted violent Islamist efforts to weaken their grip on power.
